Free Parking In Barnet To Boost Xmas Trade

icontexto-webdev-social-bookmark-09facebook48A festive parking scheme is being introduced across Barnet in a bid to boost trade in the run-up to Christmas.

Barnet Council is introducing free parking after 3pm every day on every council pay and display machine between Monday, December 7 and Sunday, January 3.

Barnet High StreetThe initiative is an extension on last year’s scheme which saw a reduction in the cost of parking in pay and display bays in 15 streets in the borough for 10p for an hour, or 50p for two hours.

It is hoped the latest plans will help to boost small traders struggling with the recession.

Leading Tory councillors have hailed the current scheme, dubbed “Free after three”.

Outgoing council leader councillor Mike Freer said: “Last year’s initiative was well received by traders and residents alike.

“This year’s ‘Free after Three’ will let residents park for free and browse for presents in a range of shops. I hope it will be a real boost to traders in what has been a difficult year.”

Councillor Andrew Harper, who is in charge of transport and the environment, said: “Income generated by pay and display machines and car parks is ring-fenced for street and pavement improvements.

“But, in a difficult year for the economy, it seems sensible to sacrifice some of that income to support local businesses.

“I hope this will be a real help to local shops and will encourage residents to have a look at some of the smaller shops we have in Barnet.”

The plans also have the backing of several groups of traders, including Chipping Barnet Traders, East Finchley Traders and the North London Chamber of Commerce.

A statement from the chamber said: “We are delighted to endorse this initiative which will encourage more visitors and revenue to Barnet’s local businesses.”

Other parking restriction including yellow lines and residents’ parking zones will still be operational during the free parking hours.
